Private Dwellings
Working closely with the client, DPLA provides residential design services for all sizes and types of yards. Whether the yard is new and requires design from top to bottom, or mature with existing elements to work with, DPLA uses extensive plant and material knowledge to create desirable design interventions. As a client you will receive a working set of design drawings, annotated with construction recommendations, plant types and count, recommended materials, and grading details.
Private Residence, Regina SK 2015
With a new house and young children, the client wanted a functional, easily maintainable, and safe design that encapsulated modern design strategies, a small water feature in the front, and open movement space in the back. With a distinct slope away from the house in the backyard and raised decks on the surrounding houses, this design increases privacy while enlivening the space with a selection of perennials, shrubs, and small trees that will create summer and winter interest alike.
Private Residence, Regina SK 2015
The client requested a 'naturalized' play space in the backyard to encourage the children to engage with natural materials such as sand, stone, and sticks. Both design concepts encompass open play space surfaced with lawn, balance beams made from natural materials, granular pits for building and exploration, varying types of low-maintenance perennials, shrubs, and trees to shade the yard, open space, and a inset mound slide to safely utilize the highly sloped area.

As with all private residence designs, DPLA creates a conceptual design to present to the client, to be refined upon meeting. These images here showcase the original conceptual sketch on the left, with the final digital planting plan on the right.
Private Residence, Regina SK 1994
A paved seating area with an overhead screen divides the space in this narrow back yard. Designed for the steep side yard is a set of terraced beds, used for decorative planting and/or vegetable gardening; integrated steps provide access between the walkout patio and the driveway above.
